2011 Bargain Quests

After the Christmas decorations are put away, the melancholy brought on by the winding down of another holiday season gives way to the excitement of kids going back to school, filing taxes, organizing my house, and a list of new bargains to seek.

Here's my list for 2011:

  1. Airfare to Hawaii for 7--my parents have their Mariott timeshare reserved for spring break for us, so I just need to find a great deal on airfare.

  2. Surfing lessons--see #1.

  3. Mattress set--we've had our current mattress set as long as we've been married, almost 17 years. It's time for a new set.

  4. Deck furniture--to furnish the new deck we're building in the backyard. The deck should be complete in a week or two.

What's on your list?

  1. Hoping you post pics of the deck! Yay for Hawaii!

  2. Also, what is the current wisdom for how long to keep a mattress?

  3. Various sources say anywhere from 5 to 20 years depending on the type of mattress and use (for instance, air-type mattresses and waterbeds last longer, while jumping on the bed will shorten the lifespan). Other things to consider are dust mites and comfort. My parents just replaced their mattress set. They have been married for 55 years. I don't know if that was their first, but they had the same set the whole time I was growing up. However, the thought of dust mites collecting where I sleep gives me the creeps!

  4. Ooooh fun. I am on a quest to find cheap wheat, batteries, and bulk baking goods (flour, sugar, etc.). Also potentially a bike for me.

I'm also going to start research potential destinations for our ten year anniversary (October 2012... I like to plan ahead). So far I have Ireland, Dubai (free housing with a friend, although a little strange to do on an anniversary trip), and Belize. I'm just looking for a good deal.
